One week after the fatal shooting of Peyton Strickland, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Christopher M. Long was dismissed from his job.

Friday’s announcement came late in the afternoon in a terse release from the sheriff’s office. The press release advised that it would be fruitless to ask any questions about the firing, citing ongoing investigations by the State Bureau of Investigation and the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office “regarding Long’s recent actions.”

A deputy mistook the hammering of a battering ram for the blast of a gun, then fired the shots that killed Peyton Strickland, a prosecutor said in court Monday.

Three days after the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office fired Christopher Long, 34, a grand jury indicted him on a charge of second-degree murder.

The New Hanover County district attorney says the case involving a former deputy is far from over. District Attorney Ben David announced Thursday morning that the investigation into Peyton Strickland’s death is still ongoing, and anticipates further legal action.

“I will follow the law,” David said. “That’s what I’ve done up until now and that’s what I will continue to do.”

After a week’s worth of twists and turns, David seems confident former Deputy Christopher Long will face some future legal charges. On Monday, David delivered a grand jury’s verdict indicting Long and charging him with second degree murder for killing 18-year-old Strickland.

New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David announced Thursday morning that the investigation into Peyton Strickland’s death is still ongoing.

On Tuesday, a judge over turned that indictment, saying the jury foreman mistakenly checked the wrong box. That led the case back to square one: a dead teen and no indictments.

David continued, “If there are any charges to come after the SBI’s investigation, the appropriate action is to present that investigation to a grand jury that was done this Monday and continue to be the way this case is handled.”

It will be a while before this grand jury will take another look at this case. They are currently in recess and won’t reconvene until sometime in January.

An autopsy report says the teenager killed when a sheriff’s deputy fired through his door had gunpowder on his chest.
Experts say that means 18-year-old Peyton Strickland was likely no more than two feet from the deputy when the deputy fired.
Strickland had been accused of stealing a PlayStation 3 console when law enforcement officials went to his house in Wilmington to
arrest him. The deputy, Christopher Long, has told prosecutors he mistook the sound of a police battering ram for gunfire and shot through the door, hitting Strickland. No charges are filed against Long, but it’s possible a grand jury could still indict him.
Strickland, a Durham native, died after being hit in the head and chest.

Is there no question of whether Deputy Long had a psych eval before being allowed into the police force? And if he did, what the heck were the results?
