Just when bewilderment at the spectacle of Steve Cohen going absolutely berserk on an Armenian film crew had started to subside (they were trailing him over his opposition to recognition of the 1915 Armenian genocide), I read that an Armenian socnet war is on the make.
Due to the perception that Obama is stronger on the issue of recognition (even though he endorsed Cohen), ethnic Armenians have apparently become strong supporters of Obama over the genocide issue, while Turks are lining up behind John McCain in default opposition.
To spread the message, some Armenians have set up a Facebook social group , while the Turks have created an to denounce them.
Sigh. This serves as a further demonstration that the issue of the Armenian genocide remains capable of adapting itself to almost any political situation, ninety-three years after it transpired.
It also illustrates the necessity of recognizing war crimes early and settling accounts near the event, for both the perpetrator[s] and the international community. No one but the most rabid Armenian nationalist contends today that Turkey intends to commit any new ethnic cleansing operations against Armenia, given that the nature of Turkey is now so radically different from the days of Ottoman rule. Yet the issue remains unresolved, distorting and poisoning the politics of entirely new states and international institutions to the detriment of all parties.
