Looking over our logs, it’s incredible how much global traffic we get from people searching for information on Alan Finch (August’s #1 ASHC keyword and a top-30 quantity since February). Perhaps a little odd for a blog that tends to focus on American party politics, economic theory and international affairs.

To recap you, Alan is an Australian man who had a double sex-change (first from male to female and then from female to male). He was the subject of a very brief AtW post by myself in February, and thereafter became the source of all this traffic.

Bingeing and Purging

Garance picks up on the neologism “drunkorexia.” It’s a fittingly ugly word for the ugly habit of combining your eating disorder with alcohol abuse. Garance attributes it to the evolution of the “Gawker mindset,” which I suppose in this context might be defined as a fascination with the personal implosions of psychologically disturbed young celebrities, leading to a self-destructive urge toward emulation. I’d merely say that wealthy countries have to create their own problems. Can you imagine trying to seriously explain this preposterous phenomenon to a poor woman in Madagascar, where 70% of the population suffers from involuntary malnutrition?

Tony Harnden: “Initially, it was said just young people voted for Obama. Then it was young people and affluent white. Then it was young people, affluent whites and black people. Then it was young people, affluent whites, black people and white males. Well, in Maryland last night he won women, Hispanics, Catholics and seniors as well. The way this is going, there’ll soon only be one-legged Asian-American old ladies for Hillary.”
