I met Lance through one of my previous blog incarnations at postpolitical. Together we got involved in several joint venture projects including interviews, complementary posting projects and making a deliberate nuisance of ourselves with left-wing bloggers. When I left PP Lance asked me if I’d like to post on ASHC from time to time. Actually he’d been hinting at that for months, but I just pretended to be dense about it. Anyway, I consented and here I am. No doubt having wasted your time recently with the depressing history of obscure places, quixotic foreign policy ventures, and citations from strange and unpopular source material.
Politically I’m somewhere in the gap between mainstream conservatism and libertarianism and am consequently perhaps the least libertarian of the crew. However, I too descend from the same libertarian firmament that characterizes ASHC’s dominant personality. Thrilling to Ayn Rand in High School and Mises in college, I was one of those unbearable little minarchists that teachers hated and the private sector later loves.
But I’ve become convinced that true libertarianism requires that you not start importing copious quantities of cynicism and nationalism into your political views. I failed that test in adulthood with experience in human nature and 9/11, even if I did and do remain sympathetic to certain libertarian ideals. Basically, I’ll take the deregulated free market and the abolition of gun control, but the LP can keep the stuff like legalized consensual incest and cocaine for sale in your corner convenience store.
I live in New Mexico and run a software company for a living. Some of my current side projects are the image blog Flickrfy and the work-in-progress historical site on the Falklands War: Falklands.org.uk.
