Further conservative consolidation behind Mr. Slick. My friend the Huckabeeist has given in with an endorsement of Mitt Romney.

Jason’s got the right idea of why McCain isn’t acceptable. And I understand your “gut-check” analysis, but I’m having a real hard time considering Romney a truly reasonable alternative.
My thinking right now is that the strategic choice is Hillary: (a) she motivates the small government Republican base, (b) she practically ensures a Republican Congress that will stop her worst shenanigans in their tracks, (c) despite all the rhetoric, she won’t screw up regarding Iraq (although, it’s likely she will screw up future entanglements in the ME and Central Asia), and (d) she will not get a second term.
Of course, I’m also reasonably confident that Obama will be the Democratic candidate, and in fact will go on to win the presidency. So this is all pretty academic.
