The Thompson Surge!-Updated

According to Matt Lewis:

Anyone watching Iowa had better not write Fred Thompson off just yet …

Why?

Matt points me to this column:

But after a sluggish start, Thompson has sensed an opening in Iowa, and he’s moving decisively to exploit it. The opening arises from a combination of Romney’s changes of position on social issues and Huckabee’s stumbles on foreign-policy questions and immigration.

After his winning performance in the Des Moines Register’s debate, Thompson has embarked on a lengthy bus tour of the state. During these final days, his campaign says he’ll hold events in 50 communities and will visit 54 of the 99 counties.

On Monday, he picked up the surprise endorsement of Congressman Steve King. Of all the endorsements flying around these days, that one could move the most numbers. It sends a powerful signal from one of Iowa’s most conservative leaders to others on the right around the state: We’ve now got a horse we can ride.

Are they?

“I think, just based on the reception we’ve seen in the last 24 hours, it’s been nothing short of spectacular.”

“… It’s hoots and hollers and ‘hell yeas’ from the back of the room. It’s almost Revivalesque. It’s stuff we’re not used to in Iowa,” says Haus.

Of course they aren’t used to it, because never has a candidate had an approach like this:

Heh, makes you want to hoot and holler, don’t it?

Update: Frank J gives us further insight into why he believes Fred is the man:

But we can’t just go by our gut. Let’s compare the main attributes of Fred Thompson versus the other candidates:

Fred Thompson: Teh Awesome

Other Candidates: Teh Suck

I believe when you lay things out this way, the reasons to support Fred Thompson over the other candidates becomes obvious, especially since IMAO has long held the position that “Teh Awesome” is better than “Teh Suck.”

Read the rest for less nuanced reasons Fred is the one for Frank J and America.

About Lance

I want to thank everybody who has encouraged me over the past few years to do this. I doubt it will hold but a few people's interest, but that is okay with me. Special thanks go to Peter over at http://www.liberalcapitalist.com. I value my privacy a great deal, so I will guess you will have to get to know me over time to find out much. I am in the financial services, wealth management, investing or whatever you want to call it business. I have children, my oldest is entering college. I have no great or imposing academic background, my grades varied from high enough to get invited to an honors program at my university to frustrating enough to cause my father great grief. My major was history, with a minor in ethics. My main interest towards the end was in the history of economic ideas before life took a turn and I ended up never going on to graduate school. However, I have a fair knowledge of history, economics, investing and would probably be considered well read. My tastes are eclectic and I pretty much find the entire world interesting. I have an enduring interest in how people learn about and analyze the world; my posts here will examine this topic in detail over time. I make no claims to be above the very biases and errors I see in others, in fact it is my belief that we are incapable of escaping them, only moderating their control over us. I am a member of no political party, but I would broadly consider myself a man of the right. I am inclined to free market economics, limited government and a fairly narrow view of the role of the state. A small L libertarian if you will. However, if you are looking for broad based "the left believes..." or "wingers are so...." types of attacks on liberals, conservatives, neo-cons or whatever enemy you want to slam, look elsewhere. Hahaha, copying a more successful candidate’s commercials and looking to actors for tips on how to run the country and joking about ushering in tyranny is like TOTALLY awesome and makes me want to vote for him!

  2. Lance says:

    Stick in the mud.

If we can’t make fun of him, the other candidates, and the general views some people have about what being a conservative is (that being some conservatives and many liberals) while poking fun at oneself, well, the world is getting a little too prickly.

  3. Joshua Foust says:

I’ll accept that. I’m also okay with being a stick in the mud when the country is deliberating over the use of extrajudicial torture and people hype a beyond-elderly candidate’s ability to murder those who disagree with him.

  4. Lance says:

If that is your take on it then you really have missed things.

  5. Joshua Foust says:

Again, I’ll accept I’m probably cranky. But I guess I’m not the target demographic for watered-down unfunny Chuck Norris facts.

  6. Lance says:

I don’t care if you find it funny Joshua. I just don’t get your interpretation of it, and thus that something unfunny bothers you. To attach to it some kind of dark meaning, as if the earth being scared of Thompson means people are hyping his ability to pave over the earth. That makes as much sense as your observation earlier.

I guess the Nietszche, Kant campaign video I posted earlier means deep down I am celebrating humorously my real “Will to Power.” Whether one found that funny or not, it certainly doesn’t imply that people who watch it are really Nietzsche fans.

  7. Joshua Foust says:

No, not like that. I guess I don’t see the wit in this, since it’s just copying Mike Huckabee’s far more effective use of the real Chuck Norris. It’s just… I dunno, really dumb and shallow. Maybe that’s the point, though, given how the election is shaping up.

  8. ChrisB says:

The Fred Thompson facts predate any Mike Huckabee commercial by a few months. It’s not like the Thompson campaign is even involved or behind this video though.

  9. Lance says:

Yeah, its from Frank J. That is his schtick. He is glorying in dumb and shallow. Glenn Reynolds puts puppies in a blender, etc. Some PETA types find that offensive as it makes fun of their sensitivity on the topic (even if unintentionally.) Putting puppies in a blender just isn’t funny man!

Maybe not, but pardon me for not giving it any moral weight either, kind of like here:

I’m also okay with being a stick in the mud when the country is deliberating over the use of extrajudicial torture and people hype a beyond-elderly candidate’s ability to murder those who disagree with him.

    Hmmm….

I’m also okay with being a stick in the mud when the country is cruelly raising animals in brutal conditions, testing chemicals on their eyes and flaying the skin from their bodies and wearing them, while people hype a gun nut law professor’s joy in dropping man’s best friend into the domestic household’s version of a plastic shredder.

Actually, my PETA guy has a better point.

  10. Lance says:

Also, what is with the ageist slur anyway?

Go back to bed old man!
