“Hoos For Hokies”

My wife (a University of Virginia girl) just sent me these pictures of Beta Bridge in Charlottesville, VA where the University of Virginia is located.
Hoos for Hokies

Beta Bridge is a small bridge located on Rugby Rd. that runs past most of the fraternities and sororities. It is routinely painted and re-painted.

For those who don’t know, there is a pretty intense rivalry between UVA and Va. Tech, much like there is between most of the big state schools with their intrastate rivalries (e.g. Univ. of Mich./Mich. St.).

Hoos for Hokies 2

It’s not unexpected, and I’m sure that Va. Tech would have displayed similar sentiments if the situation were reversed, but it’s nice to see all the same.

Also, for those who may not know, “Hoos for Hokies” is a reference to the team nicknames: Wahoos = UVA; Hokies = Va. Tech.

UPDATE: For those of you seeking the Hoos mascot hugging the Hokie bird, this may be what you all are looking for:
We're All Hokies

But also note that Va. Tech has requested that memorial T-shirts not be made:

“At this point we have decided that we are not going to allow any type of memorial or tribute products. I believe I know what cartoon it is, and it is very good. But we have been overrun with requests for [tribute and fund-raising] products and we’ve taken the position not to allow anything just because we would lose control of [our mascot] and lose control of tracking the money. So at this point we’re going to have to say no. At some point in the near future we may be interested in using these products…. Again, we are not allowing them now but we may in the near future.”

I’m a UVA grad.  Yesterday I forwarded this to my wife, a Va. Tech grad.  It has been forwarded around many times since.
I am extremely impressed with the way the "Hokie Nation" (I don’t really favor those overused tags, but in this case it has proven to be most-well-deserved) is together through all of this, has shown solidarity, and proven that they are handling this terrible situation more heart-warmingly, rationally, staunchly,  and effectively than almost all other college communites in the world.

The support from UVA to Tech is Amazing.  It warms my soul to know that rivalries were put aside during a time like this.  I live in C’ville for 15 years and moved to Wytheville which is 40 miles away from Blacksburg. I would love to have a Hoos for Hokies shirt if their are any in the shops in C’ville please leave a message and let me know!  God Bless!!

This is a great display of compassion!  I’m for the Hokies all the way but it’s a great thing that the Hoo’s have done here.
Stephanie, you might find that picture on http://www.lansingcartoons.com althought I think it has been added.  I don’t know if that’s the picture that you are looking for.
Thanks Hoo’s for being so supportive!

As a 96 Tech grad I thought this was a very admirable thing for UVA to do to show it’s support of my fellow Hokies.  Way to go UVA!

As a VMI’66 and UVA Law’69 grad I have always enjoyed the rivalries with VaTech (VPI to we oldies), even tho many cousins, brother-in-law and friends are Hokies. Several neighborhood children and my niece’s fiance are current students and are safe, most fortunately. I am on a Europe business trip and positive, sympathetic reporting on the VaTech students is on local TV and in local papers. Today in Oslo I wore a Hokie colored tie and told people why, then wore it as I flew to Spain. I was very proud to be a temporary Hokie and show its colors around a bit.

    Go Hokies

I don’t know if this is what some of you are looking for, but see the update on this post (above) for a cartoon with several of the mascots from Virginia schools comforting the Hokie mascot.
