Will Calls for Gun Control Be Far Behind???

The shootings that happened today at Virginia Tech are horrific. There’s no possible justification for it.
The political exploitation of these events is what I fear most. 2nd Amendment concerns were pretty much poo-pooed by many Libertarians, and others who wished most to punish the Republicans for bad policies. But, I’m certain it will be deja vu all over again. After each school shooting in the 90’s we heard the beck and call for more gun control. This led to “gun free zones” around schools, the Assault Weapons Ban, and other lesser known laws.
I can understand the desire to be safe, but then what do you open yourself up to? What liberty are you willing to curb or compromise on, for security, safety, or “for the children?” We already have had to much taken from us in the various wars vs public ills. The War on Drugs has led to infringements on our liberties, the expansion of the State, and tremendous waste of resources, both money and people. And yet you hear hardly a peep about the cost of this “war.”
Putting further rules and regulations against people who are already, generally, law abiding is only going to ensure that some gun owners will be breaking the law, as not everyone keeps up with new rules and regulations. And, while the law abiding do their best to stay within the law, those who are willing to commit violent acts, will have no problem with breaking laws to obtain or use the means with which they commit those acts.
Here are shocking examples of why banning the tools of violence doesn’t not curb violent behavior. Updated with some “brilliant” comments from HuffPo…

The 23-year-old woman, identified by sources as a student at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, endured 19 hours of rape and torture at the hands of a sick creep in her Hamilton Heights apartment Friday night.
In what Kelly called a “particularly vicious” assault, the fiend tied his victim to a bed, cut her, raped her, burned her with scalding water and chemicals – and then set the woman’s futon on fire to cover up the crime, police said.
He was so brutal he slit her eyelids, Kelly said.
A report from organization Save the Children tells of how being a young Swedish girl today means feeling unsafe. The girls are scared of being raped, a possibility that appears very real to them.
In 2001, two out of three charged with rape in Norway’s capital were immigrants with a non-western background according to a police study. Norwegian women were victims in 80 percent of the cases.
A 17-year-old Somalian was convicted of the rape of a young girl in Oslo one year ago. The court stated that the rape was unusually brutal and lasted for several hours. The Somalian choked the girl for so long that the medical doctor who examined the girl said that she could have died. The girl is now suffering from severe psychological problems in the aftermath of the attack. The youth was sentenced to four and half years in prison. The sentence also included another rape, where his Norwegian-Moroccan friend raped a 13-year-old girl whilst the Somalian helped to threaten her and keep guard. She has been traumatized from the incident.

Thank God for the 2nd Amendment and its gun-nut enablers.

Totally tragic. Now can we have the same outrage over the availability of weapons in this country as we did over the Imus controversy of last week?

The tools used in the other crimes you linked to (knives or other sharp objects and penises) have not been banned yet.
Voting in any manner that allows Democrats to win is, simply, stupid. It will be interesting to see how this falls out. Some Democrats have been pushing another assault weapon bill, we will see if this gains more support.
The general tendency is that gun banners try to ban certain guns, using mass murder as a justification, even if the mass murder in question did not use a similar type of gun. The San Yasidro McDonald’s shooting of the mid 80s was done mostly with a shotgun with a handgun and Uzi also used. The total was, (IIRC) 21 dead, of whom 4 were killed by the Uzi, per the forensics expert. Yet the Uzi received the publicity . . . And the Uzi in question was semiauto, i.e., essentially a 9mm carbine.
